CITY OF PELICAN RAPIDS PARK BOARD MEETING MINUTES
February 24, 2010
The City of Pelican Rapids Park Board held its regular meeting at 8:00a.m., Wednesday,
February 24, 2010, Council Chambers, City Hall, 315 N Broadway. Board Members, Mel
Zierke, Sandy Irey, David Gottenborg, Terra Fitzsimmons, Denise Magnusson , Mikalya
Jensen and secretary Annie Wrigg were present. Sally Huynh were absent. City
Administrator Don Solga, Street and Park Superintendent Brian Olson also present.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Mel Zierke 8:05 a.m. Quorum established.
Gottenborg made a motion to approve the February 24, 2010 minutes. Magnusson seconded
no action by council
Solga suggested that we send someone to a council meeting in march to updated Council on
the progress on the Veterans’ Memorial Park
Veterans Memorial park.
Irey gave update on the benches included prices and styles. Olson would investigate on how
much is really required to put them together. Due to the fact that the cost of the assembly
changes the cost considerably. Two brandon curved benches, two round picnic tables, the
company suggested that one seat on the round table could be taken out so that it was ADA
compliant. The Plaza bench was popular with us, but would the wood back create
maintenance? Round picnic table would be nice on pavers. Concerns about how to make
the table that allows for the wheelchair. With all the tables 2 tables, 2 brandon, and 2
benches, is about $7K. The Brandon would be for in the flower beds. Irey with another
expense for the pavers to put under the tables and benches. Decision to be made about what
we are requesting from Oktoberfest. The items together total approximately $5,000 without
assembly. Olson will investigate on what the assembly. Gottenborg did research on the
plants. Talked with Mary Nelson and we could finish out the park for 1200-1400.
Gottenborg thinks we need 3-4 loads of compost for about $200-$400and feels we can
finish landscaping for $2500. Irey feels we need to start with a blank slate and we can start
placing. Solga we need to find out the total cost of things that we need and the dirt work so
that we can attend meetings. Gottenborg the bullet edged pavers that are easy for
maintenance to edge the flower beds. Olson to find out size of the slab for pavers for tables.
MZ will go to VFW a little later. Zierke and Solga both mentioned the need to add with the
leveling of the ground,. Solga mentioned the need to add drainage tile dug in and then
hidden. Then getting the water to move toward the drain. Trees need to get placed before
Zierke asked if we need a special meeting? Gottenborg suggested we should do it in mid
March. Special meeting on March 10 at 8am Council chambers.
Dedication sign tabled until later in the year.
Welcome Chairs: Magnusson is looking for more chairs. She is trying again. Doesn't' think
it is feasible to get new chairs for this year. Then we can do more advocacy about getting
interest in reviving the project. Then this year just focus getting the chairs updated and
fixed. Fitzsimmons check with Hannah Meyer or Michelle Jamison, about the 21st century
Solga suggested to use the City Newsletter to give people updates on the park and other
projects. Fitzsimmons would be willing to do a write up for the Newsletter on the Vet park.
Fitzsimmons to send letter to the service groups to let it know on how it goes. At the next
meeting, Magnusson will have a list of organizations and Fitzsimmons will work on a letter
to go to the service groups.
Planters Irey is working with Nelson on the Planters.
Velo Land : Solga communication needs to be started. Donors want it to be green space and
noting the donating family. Solga will review what the City has sent to Velo in the past and
report back in the next full meeting.
Welcome sign for Vet park. The other park signs MZ will check into. Remove from agenda
3-5 year plan : remove from agenda.
Meeting closed at 9:30am
